The Federal District is the first Mexican institution to approve gay marriage, which has generated numerous opinions for and against. Tolerance and discrimination are part of the debate, although many other components are added to the discussion.
As is publicly known, recently passed gay marriage celebration in Mexico City and at the same time, empowered the community couples to adopt children. The closest antecedent of this controversial new law occurred when he created the figure of "cohabitation unions, also in the Federal District.
Today, the enactment of the Act places the capital of Mexico in the same vein of countries like Belgium, Canada, Spain, Netherlands, Norway, South Africa and Sweden and some U.S. states, including Connecticut , Iowa, Massachusetts and Vermont, where gay and lesbian marriage is possible.
World "Homophobic?
The most recent World Values \u200b\u200bSurvey (EMV), a study that takes into account the views of significant numbers of people around the world, it is clear that mankind has little tolerance behavior towards the gay community.
The results of the GSS applied in 2009 (this analysis began to be held in early 1970) show that the most economically developed countries are those that have lower levels of homophobia. Within this universe, the Netherlands and Sweden leading the way and if we speak of the Americas, representing Canada ends, where only 25.3% of the population rejects homosexuality, and El Salvador, where 78.7% of people make the discrimination against gays and lesbians.
beautiful Mexico y. .. antihomosexual
Recently surveys have become the reference for understanding the behavior of Mexican society. In the case of homosexuality, Consulta Mitofsky, a specialized business sector, conducted an investigation in 2007 concluded that gay men and lesbian women face rejection by a large sector of the population, it is equivalent to that experience with AIDS. And, according to the study, only 4 of 10 individuals would accept a gay person in your home.
However, by segmenting the population by age was noted that the rejection of individuals with homosexual orientation is very high on the part of citizens over 50 years, but more than half of the Mexicans under 30 years accepted, which means that new generations are more tolerant.
Also, respondents were very clear when asked what his stance on the possibility of meeting the partner of a homosexual son or daughter: 46% of Mexicans would prefer not to know his son's partner (s) especially men and people living in rural areas of the country. Finally, it is revealing to know that 43% of the respondents think that the homosexual "born", while 47% think it "is."
Marriage and adoption
Hernán Paniagua Avalos, philosopher and psychologist National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM, Mexico City), told a couple saludymedicinas.com.mx homosexual orientation to acquire legal status will have obvious advantages, such as social security to give to your partner and even adopt a son.
"It seems that gay couples come from everywhere, but it is not, what happens is that they now feel freer to leave out the underground," establishes the specialist, who claims that the law in question serves , among other things, that there is a possibility to discuss this issue openly, but also to homosexual couples gain greater commitment and do not break their relationship so easily.
Paniagua Avalos, individual and couple psychotherapist with humanistic approach, which mainly caters to the gay community, believes that the media in general are doing good work: "There is a trend in recent years that seeks to prevent hate speech and discrimination, because they understand that it is not politically correct to do so. Sure, there are exceptions and just mention what happened recently with Esteban Arce ", host of a morning show who said that homosexuality is not natural.
members of the Catholic Church, says the interviewee, have every right to externalize their opinion and speak up, but should take into account as part of an institution that affects many people. "It is dangerous to claim that the decision to allow marriage for same sex is an attack on families and that can produce severe psychological damage on children."
abounds specialist: "I think they are not well informed, because it speaks of the vulnerability of the family and the traditional composition of the same, as if all were functional in Mexico. It speaks of a social unit with dad, mom, two kids and a dog, but we recognize that there are countless cases where the lack of a father or mother, and that does not mean not work. "
Moreover, Hernán Paniagua remember that no single ideal model, but many possible. "If we accept the diversity in sexuality we must accept the possibility of diversity in the composition of families, and can be as functional as those without children formed cumpuesta other by a gay couple with an adopted child."
If the Church and conservative sectors of society report, says the expert, they would see that there are studies showing that the family can not be traditionally, each social unit has its own rules and that, regardless of way is formed, its members may or may not get along.
"We often see in the various clinics of the Federal District in which I participate, women who are battered, humiliated, disqualified and abused by their partners, belonging to all social classes and are part of families 'well formed', of which speaking as a prototype of the social cell, "the interviewee. Data revealing
Consulta Mitofsky addressed the issue of gay rights in the 2007 study, just as they began to see signs of legalizing marriage between same sex. According to research, 45.7% of respondents felt that a gay couple should have the same rights as heterosexual, 47.3% were against and 7% did not respond.
When asked about whether gays should have the right to marry, 58.3% said no, while 32.5% voted in favor. About whether lesbians should be entitled to adopt a child, 58.2% said they disagreed, while 33.6% answered affirmatively. When asked the same thing, but in the case of unions between men, rose to negative 68.5%, while only 22.9% agreed. Avalos Paniagua
reiterates that there are many people who think that the adoption of a child by a partner homosexuality is a perversion, but such considerations, he says, lack the basics of weight.
is because we know that a child will have clear concepts of female and male models do not see at home, but see references in the closest relatives of the couple, uncles and aunts, cousins, grandparents and grandmothers, among others. "And if there were no physical or material these models in the social networks of gay couples, then the kids collect this information from their environment and the media. In this way understand what it means to be man and wife. "
In the U.S., says the therapist, it was found stable homosexual couples with adopted children have been able to create an atmosphere of love and harmony. Maybe all you need, says Paniagua Avalos, that the possibility of adopting is a great achievement as a blessing in religious terms and, therefore, appreciate it a lot. A growing child in such circumstances very carefully and with the awareness that their family is different, allowing you to accept diversity in others and respond appropriately to the possible discrimination against him or his family.
is not to say that gay couples are better than heterosexual women, since both models are very valid. "I would venture to think, however, that a gay couples would give your child more secure, love and strategies to tolerate diversity and differences of others, "the specialist concludes. Middle
